The “Silver Branch” or bough refers to a few old Celtic myths about a sacred or enchanted tree that produces silver apples. In some myths the tree lives in the Underworld and is watched over by Mother Winter. In others carrying a branch from this tree transports one to the otherworlds or land of Fairy. These myths and others like them, molded my young mind and captured my imagination.
I grew up on a mountain surrounded by wild forests. I was convinced this tree existed somewhere and if I could only find it, I might cross the veil and see the fairies. The Silver Branch, gleaming in the darkness, laden with magical apples and silver bells became like a beacon for me, and a portal into other worlds, just like the still pools in the forest between-the-worlds in The Magician’s Nephew, or Dorothy’s tornado… or any deep cave by the sea, or large knot at the base of an oak tree, or chuckling mountain stream with a Hawthorn tree growing next to it.
The name Woodlander Books references the forests that I grew up in and will always hold dear, the forests in fairy tales my mom used to read to me, and the forests we are cutting down worldwide with capitalist abandon and cruelty. The forest is full of stories, magic and enchantment, not to mention animals, plants and ecosystems unto themselves - these are places where whole worlds collide, deep knowledge is found and so many adventures begin - places that need protecting from all the bad witches. The Silver Branch is just one denizen of such a place, and your portal to all things Woodlander.
